This morning I did an interview about my The Wish Sisters series books for CBCA Book Week and the last question the lovely interviewer asked me was, “Can you give me three quick tips for young writers?”.
Cue: panic.
The thing is, the writer in me doesn’t like to do anything quickly.
When it comes to words, I like to take my time. Mull them over. Write them down. Re-write them. Re-write them again. Maybe edit them a little more after that.
You get the picture.
There’s also another element to the panic – the belief (and I find most writers have this and I’m surprised that I still have it after 30 published books) that you don’t actually know what you’re talking about. And even if you did know what you’re talking about, it doesn’t really matter because everyone writes differently anyway.
That’s a lot to be going on with, isn’t it?!
Anyway, in the interview moment, I had a bit of a pause and thought … what do I really, bottom-of-the-line, hand-on-my-heart know about writing books?
And I came up with three things.
